Giuliana Monteiro (Brazil)

Giuliana Monteiro is a Brazilian writer and director interested in telling intimate stories that highlight the diversity of Latin America. Her work blurs the line between fiction and nonfiction resulting in the encounter of universal elements. Her most recent work includes the fiction feature film After the Mud Dries (in development), the documentary feature Crazy for Bento (in post-production, to be released in 2025), and the short film Maré (Tide) (2024) broadcasted by Paramount+. Giuliana’s work has been supported by the San Francisco Film Society and Kenneth Rainin Foundation, Fusion, the New York Foundation for the Arts, Spike Lee, Projeto Paradiso, Berlinale, BAFTA, Cine Qua Non Lab, and Toronto International Film Festival, and has played in more than 40 international films festivals. She received her M.F.A. in Filmmaking from the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University (NYU). Giuliana is a member of the Brazilian Filmmakers Collective and the co-founder of Elefanti Films, an independent production company based in São Paulo.

Giuliana was a participant in Cine Qua Non Lab’s 2020 Script Revision Lab with Road to Livramento (now After the Mud Dries).

After the Mud DriesTwo estranged brothers are forced together after their family home is destroyed by a man-made environment crime. With their younger brother being the last remaining link to their family existence, they embark on a journey to find him.
