Jonathan Cortés (Colombia)

Jonathan Cortés is a Colombian director, screenwriter and producer based in Montreal. He studied advertising in Medellín before emigrating to Canada, where he studied audiovisual production and screenwriting at the University of Quebec in Montreal (UQAM). His short film 11 (Onze) was selected to be shot at MELS Studios in Montreal. Later, in Barcelona, he completed an M.F.A. in Film Directing and shot My Name Is Alba (2020), which won awards at several film festivals. In 2024, he released El último macho, currently in distribution. His documentary When I Grow Young is currently in post-production. Jonathan has received support from the Quebec Council for the Arts (CALQ) and participated in the Makila Incubator with his project Langue maternelle, which won third place in the Cuban Hat pitch. In 2025, he was part of the Coalition Média delegation at the Berlinale. He is currently a co-producer at La Nomade Films and is developing his first feature films — L’enfant Jésus and Mata-Ratas. His films explore human complexity and contemporary moral dilemmas.

Mata-Ratas After being mugged in Medellín, Jonathan and his friends respond with violence, recording the attack. Unexpectedly, the video goes viral. What begins as an act of self-defense turns into Mata-Ratas, a digital phenomenon that encourages people to take the law into their own hands, unleashing a dangerous spiral .
