Itzel Sacnité is a Mexican director, screenwriter and producer. She studied filmmaking at the Escuela Superior de Cine (ESCINE) film school in Mexico City. Her documentary short film Una promesa premiered at the MICGénero Festival in Mexico City in 2022. In 2020, Itzel was supported by the Creative and Artistic Development Program (PECDA) in Morelos to develop her short film Y los días pasan, which premiered at the 2022 Morelia International Film Festival, was screened at the 2023 Biarritz Amérique Latine Festival, and was the winner of the Neo Mex category at the 2023 Mexico Shorts Festival. Her first feature-length documentary as a producer, Binnigula’sa’: the ancient Zapotecs, was awarded the 2020 Grant for Audiovisual Creation in Mexico and Central America for Indigenous and Afro-descendant Communities (ECAMC) by the Mexican Film Institute (IMCINE) and premiered at film festivals such as El Lugar Que Habitamos (2024), Muestra Oaxaca: Cine para la Vida, and the Ambulante Documentary Tour in 2025. Itzel is currently developing the script for her debut feature film: Bajo el agua.
Bajo el agua — Isabel is 68 years old and has never learned to swim. An unexpected and painful confrontation with her ex-husband prompts her to take swimming lessons, reclaim her life, and embrace her old age.
