Rafaela Camelo (Brazil)

Rafaela Camelo is a Brazilian director and screenwriter. Her debut feature, A Natureza das Coisas Invisíveis (The Nature of Invisible Things), a co-production between Brazil and Chile, premiered at the Berlinale in 2025 and has received over 20 awards, including the Critics’ Award at the São Paulo International Film Festival, the Young Audience Award at the Uruguay Film Festival, a Special Jury Mention at the Seattle International Film Festival, and the Jury Award at Frameline. Her short film As Miçangas (The Beads), co-directed with Emanuel Lavor, was selected for the Berlinale in 2023 and won the Best Short Film Award at Filmfest Dresden. Her previous short film, O Mistério da Carne (Desires of the Flesh), premiered at Sundance in 2019 and won the Best Film Awards at Festival Biarritz Amérique Latine and FEST—New Directors/New Films Festival. Rafaela is currently developing the feature film La hermana mayor with support from the Hubert Bals Fund.

La hermana mayor [co-written with André Pereira] After the death of her older sister, eleven-year-old Isabel discovers that her mother, Verónica, is able to channel the dead. To comfort her daughter, Verónica brings back the spirit of the deceased sister every night, in an endless cycle of farewells.
