Alexandra «Alle» Hsu is a filmmaker born and raised in Orange County, California. She received her M.F.A. in Film Directing and Production from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. Prior to that, Alle earned a B.A. from Scripps College, double majoring in Media Studies and Asian Studies. Her documentary Women: Cultural Revolution to Capitalist Revolution (2011) was part of the Pomona College Museum of Art’s “China Insights” exhibit and received a museum grant in 2011. Alle co-wrote, directed and produced in Hong Kong the short film Sophie (2015), which had its world premiere at the Austin Film Festival and its international premiere at the Foyle Film Festival, both Oscar®-qualifying festivals, and went on to screen at over 15 film festivals around the world. She also directed Our Way Home (2018), a 1960s period short film set in Long Island, New York, which premiered at Oscar®-qualifying HollyShorts Film Festival in 2018. Alle will be starting the festival run this year on two short films: POP! (2021), her NYU thesis film, starring Emmy®-nominated actress Michelle Ang, and Rencontres paysannes (Farmers Dating) (2021). She was named the Featured Artist in Film at Kearny Street Workshop’s 20th APAture Arts Festival in 2019, where she was also highlighted on NBC News. Alle was part of the SFFILM FilmHouse Residency in 2019-2020, with her feature film Queens. She is currently directing a short film, in the pilot year of the CBS Leadership Pipeline Challenge, for the Los Angeles non-profit SafeBae. Alle’s work focuses on telling stories truthfully and authentically, while focusing on universal and relatable female narratives of Asian and Asian American women, and women whose stories haven’t been told yet.
