Angelo Defanti is a director and screenwriter interested in adapting various mediums into film, especially original materials that contain and express unique Brazilian elements. His first feature, The Club of Angels, a Brazilian-Portuguese co-production based on the book by Luis Fernando Verissimo, premiered at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival and was released in theaters in 2022. It received nine nominations at the Brazilian Film Academy Awards and won the award for Best Adapted Screenplay. The screenplay also received the Best Comedy Award from the Brazilian Screenwriters Association. In 2016, Angelo wrote and directed the HBO series HQ: Special Edition, a blend of documentary and animation. Recently, he served as writer for The Evandro Case, a true-crime series hit on Globoplay. Angelo has directed six short films, which have garnered awards at film festivals such as Rio de Janeiro, Brasília, Havana and Toulouse. Currently, he is in post-production on a Netflix series in which is the creator and director.
Angelo was a participant in Cine Qua Non Lab’s 2020 Storylines Lab with Borges.
