Jazz Martinez-Gamboa is an award-winning Cuban-British theater director who in recent years has begun to venture into film. He holds an M.A. in Directing (graduated summa cum laude) from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA). In 2017 he founded La Montaña Productions in Havana and, since then, he has been active in Havana’s theaters, premiering his shows in the most important venues of the capital’s circuit. His theater productions include Martin McDonagh’s The Lonesome West; an all-female version of Shakespeare’s Richard III (Aire Frío award for best staging, granted by the Asociación Hermanos Saíz (AHS) in Cuba); Peter Shaffer’s Equus (nominated in Cuba for best director in 2019); and August Strindberg’s Miss Julie. In 2022 he co-wrote and directed the short film Mancha (The Stain), which was selected for the Euroconnection/Petite Fabrique development program in Clermont-Ferrand. Recently, Jazz completed La pecera (The Fish Tank), which he wrote and directed. He is currently prioritizing the writing and development of his first feature film, Susurros.
Susurros — A young gay man, HIV positive, is forced to stay in a sanatorium. It is Cuba in 1986, and many years must pass before he regains his “freedom”. Outside, he must also fight against a world full of hate and prejudice.
