Rita Toledo (Brazil)

Rita Toledo is a Brazilian screenwriter, director and producer, partner at Daza Filmes. Rita wrote and produced I Owe You a Letter About Brazil (Special Mention at the Amsterdam International Documentary Film Festival (IDFA) in 2019) and produced Divine Divas (Hot Docs 2017, SXSW 2017 Audience Award, Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival Audience Award and the highest grossing documentary in Brazil in 2017). Rita created and produced the Operation Sonia Silk, a series of three feature films (Harmonica’s Howl, Rio Belongs to Us and The End of an Age) which were awarded by the Hubert Bals Fund in 2012 and premiered at the Rotterdam International Film Festival in 2013. Rita was the showrunner for The Life Ahead, a show for Globoplay, the biggest Brazilian streaming platform. Rita received an M.F.A. in Screenwriting from the AFI Conservatory in Los Angeles as a recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship (2015-2017). She is a Berlinale Talents alumna and a member of the Paradiso Talent Network.

Bete Based on a true story. In 1985, Bete Mendes, a recently elected congresswoman, recognizes the military officer who tortured her during the dictatorship era. As she contemplates whether to denounce her tormentor, memories surface of the period when she balanced her career as a soap opera actress with her armed struggle against the regime.
