Caru Alves de Souza (Brazil)

Caru Alves de Souza is a Brazilian director, screenwriter, and producer from São Paulo. She has been working in the film industry since 2006, making television documentaries, short and feature-length films, as well as documentary and fictional series. Her short film Family Affair (Assunto de Família) (2011) had its world premiere at the Frameline: San Francisco International LGBTQ+ Film Festival and was distributed through various platforms worldwide. Her debut feature film, Underage (De Menor) (2012), premiered internationally at the San Sebastián Film Festival and won the Best Picture Award at the Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival in 2013. Her most recent feature film, My Name Is Baghdad (Meu nome é Bagdá) (2020), won the Grand Prix for Best Film in the Generation 14+ category at the 2020 Berlinale and received over 15 national and international awards. Caru is a member of the São Paulo-based artist collectives Vermelha and Casadalapa.
