Claudio Figari (Peru)

Claudio Figari studied Audiovisual Communication at the University of Lima and then completed an M.F.A. in Screenwriting at the International School of Film and Television (EICTV) in Cuba. His first short film, En uno mismo, received a prize from the Peruvian Ministry of Culture, while his most recent film, Preludio, premiered at the Aix-en-Provence International Short Film Festival and received an honorable mention at the University of Lima Film Week. Claudio has taught film workshops at the Cultural Center of the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (PUCP), the Image Center, and the Toulouse Lautrec School in Lima. He worked as a script supervisor in Todos somos marineros, a film selected for the Rotterdam Film Festival, and as a script consultant for the documentary Runa Simi, which premiered in the official competition at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2025. His debut feature film project, El profesor suplente, adapted from the homonymous short story by Julio Ramón Ribeyro, won the National Feature Film Development Competition of the Peruvian Directorate for Audiovisual, Phonography, and New Media (DAFO) in 2024.

El profesor suplente Segundo, a 55-year-old historian who has never practiced his profession, works as a water delivery man with his cousin and takes care of his mother. When the opportunity to teach history arises, he must choose between preserving the stability of his family or following his vocation, dismantling the status quo and opening himself up for the first time to a destiny of his own.
