Santiago Fernández Calvete is an award-winning Argentine film and television screenwriter and director with more than 25 years of experience in the audiovisual industry. He studied film at the Centro de Investigación Cinematográfica (CIC) film school in Buenos Aires and specialized in screenwriting at the International Film and Television School of San Antonio de los Baños in Cuba (EICTV), as well as in Spain and the United States. After working as an assistant director on films and television movies, in 2009 he started writing and directing his own projects. Since then, he wrote and directed three feature films: La segunda muerte (2012, Argentina), Testigo íntimo (2015, Argentina-Mexico) and Sangre Vurdalak (2019, Argentina-Singapore). His latest project, La Boca del Miedo, has received development support from the Ibermedia Program. In parallel, Santiago has worked as a screenwriter for several countries, such as Mexico, Venezuela, Panama and Chile; his works include, most notably, The Exorcism of God (United States-Mexico-Venezuela).

Santiago specializes in genre cinema and has been a mentor for Blood Window’s Script Development Contest (Argentina), International Blood Window Projects (Ventana Sur) and Macabro Lab (Mexico). In addition, he was a jury member for the Tinta Oscura 2023 script contest, and he currently provides, through his content production company Fantástica Audiovisual, development mentorships to the finalist projects.

As an active participant in the audiovisual industry, Santiago is a member of the Film Commission of the Argentine Authors’ Union (SADA) and a collaborator of the Film Council of the General Society of Authors of Argentina (Argentores). Furthermore, with the intention of promoting the involvement of screenwriters in the film industry, he co-organizes El Principio del Film, Ventana Sur’s market for unpublished fiction scripts, while serving as a mentor in Brazil for Histórias que Viajam, an international script development program sponsored by Spcine, the public company for the development of the audiovisual industry in São Paulo.
